"B" Ware Great Learning Ahead!!

Next week we will be all about the letter B! We will learn about bugs, and bears, and bats..OH MY! The students will compare fiction and nonfiction books on these animals next week. We will discuss the components of each of these genres and work on writing both fiction and nonfiction pieces. The class will enjoy some poetry and of course continue to read and listen to stories written by our newest author we are studying...Mo Willems. Our new flex groups have started. You may have noticed some reading folders coming home (only some groups). If your child is bringing home this new folder, please work on reading the book inside the folder and return it for a new book once your child can read it FLUENTLY! Reading at home-even 10minutes a day-will greatly enhance your child's reading ability! Students  will be bringing  home their flex group journals this week. These journals were started WAY back in September. We now have new journals and new expectations. All of the K students are becoming such great writers!

In math next week we will review probability and continue working on addition word problems. There are still several students who are confused by the +, -, and = signs and when to use them. You may want to review these at home. We are encouraging students to draw pictures along with their number problems so we can "see what is going on in their brain". We also talk about what words tell you to add in a word problem (how many in all?) and remind them to LABEL their answers. All of these things get your child ready for extended response problems they will do in the older grades.

Before we know it we will be assessing 3rd quarter skills. At this point in the year we would like your child to be able to read the majority of our K sight words (ideally ALL of them), read books at their level fluently, be writing their name with only a capital letter at the beginning (they should begin to practice their last name too), and write using correct spacing, punctuation, and capital/lower case letters. All of these things can be easily practiced at home. You can also look over your math checklist and review our 3rd quarter math goals.
