This week we focused on animals that come from eggs. We brainstormed,
researched and learned about the characteristics of mammals and egg
laying animals. Students enjoyed reading both fiction and nonfiction
books about eggs. We especially enjoyed the book The Easter Egg Farm.
The illustrations were fun and the sequel was exciting! While reading
nonfiction books we learned about the parts of an egg and that eggs can
be different sizes, shapes, and colors.
Next week we will focus on ELEPHANTS!!!! We will read both fiction and nonfiction stories about elephants and again focus on the retelling of fiction stories. When retelling stories we are looking for a clear beginning, middle, and end and also want the students to mention characters, setting, and any problem/solution that moves the story along. With repeated practice of this important skill, students will begin to understand how to WRITE a story with these elements. At this time of year we really begin to do a lot of independent reading. We want all students to be able to read at a C level by the end of the school year. At home reading practice (and celebration) is very important in obtaining this goal. Thank you so much for doing your part at home.
In math next week we will review calculators as we learn how to skip count on them. We will also learn some new math games and be introduced to the quarter. Children are not exposed to coins like they were in the past. Please try and find opportunities for your child to interact with money. This is a tricky skill to master in K but one we are still working on.
On Friday, your child brought home their 3rd quarter report card. Please take the time to celebrate your child's accomplishments that have had so far this year. I am so impressed with all their learning and their continued excitement to learn! Remember to return the report card envelope to school ASAP....you can keep all the items from the inside. You also received an email with a list of the 1st grade sight words. You are HIGHLY encouraged to print those out and practice them as you did the K ones. Remember if your child already can read them you can have them write them and use them in sentences. Of course these sentences should contain correct spacing, capital/lower case letters, and end punctuation!
