It will be a MMMM Marvelous Week!

This week we sang along with Harry Kindergarten while learning about the calendar. You can check out Harry Kindergarten on youtbe. He has a lot of songs that support our curriculum. You might just find yourself singing along! Today your child is bringing home their October reading calendar. The kindergarten goal is to have each child read, or be read to, for 300 minutes a month (that is about 10 minutes a day). All you have to do is record the minutes read each day on the sheet and send it back at the end of the month. You do not have to record them online. If your child reached our 300 minute goal, they will recieve a "prize". Each month the prize changes. These prizes are awarded through the LMC and we have no control over them.

Next week begins our formal letter introduction. Each week we will focus on a specific letter. On Monday we will introduce the letter M. During the week we will talk about things that start with m, learn correct letter formation for Mm (start at the TOP) and write words that start with the letter Mm. We will be emailing optional homework sheets beginning next week. These sheets provide opportunities for your child to review some of the things we learn in class especially if your child struggles with letter/soiund indentification.These pages do not need to be returned to school, but if students bring them to school, they will be given a sticker.

We will continue learning our jolly phonics sounds/motions too. We are about half way through the program. At this time your child should be able to begin reading and writing words with all the letters we have learned. They do a great job in class. You should try this at home...you will be amazed! Each week your child will bring home 1-2 popcorn words. This week they are bringing home 'my'. Next week they will bring home 'I, like'. Please place these words in the popcorn box you were given at Curriculum Night and refer to the handout on how to practice these sight words at home. It is really important that your child begins to be able to recognize these on sight!

In math we will begin to discuss attributes and how to describe things using them. We will look for shapes in our world and notice how everything is some sort of a shape! :)

Flex groups start next week. Each child has been placed in a group that will be working on skills they need to become better readers/writers. Your child may or may not be with me for flex group. Our goal is to reevaluate these groups every 6-8 weeks. Your child may move groups at that time. Several of the groups are working on the SAME skills so don't worry if they do not change groups-it doesn't mean they are not making progress.

As usual it will be a busy week in Kindergarten. We always have a lot going on!
