During the upcoming week we will be reviewing many of the
topics that we have been covering in class since October. Students will spend
time going over their sight words, playing our math games, reading our letter of
the week poems, and of course blending the sounds together from our jolly
phonics program. We will continue to practice our reading strategies of 'get
your mouth ready' and 'use picture clues' as well as work on reading
independently for an extended period of time.
A new topic we will focus on is our 5 senses. The class will be introduced to the 5 senses (taste, touch, sight, sound, and smell) through read alouds, short video clips, and hands on experiences. There also will be opportunities to visit our wonder center which will be filled with 5 senses materials. Our study of the 5 senses will carry into the following week and will lead into our next unit of study in science, nutrition.
Conferences will be held Monday evening, all day Tuesday (there is no school on this day) and again Thursday evening. I look forward to meeting with you during your assigned time and discussing your child's academic and social progress this year. Conferences are meant to be for parents only. If you do need to bring your child, it may be best to bring something for them to work on outside of the classroom. There is a lot to go over and only a short time to do it, so I apologize in advance if we run out of time. As you know, I am always available to talk about your child. Sending me an email with any quick questions is always a good way to get a fast update! The book fair will be in the LMC on conference days. There are a lot of great books available so you may want to set aside some time to visit! There will be a classroom wish list at the book fair. These books would be used in our classroom to support our curriculum or for the children to read at free reading time. KW students LOVE to read!
As the cold weather approaches I always like to remind everyone again how difficult it is to get coats, hats, scarves, boots, snowpants, etc on 26 kids, 3 times a day, in a timely manner. It is very helpful if your child can COMPLETELY dress themselves in their winter gear (including putting back on and tying their shoes). There are still several children who can not zip their own coats (some coats are cute but very hard to zip), pull sleeves back (especially from those coats that have that zip in extra layer), or reattach hoods/fur that come off their coats. I can not even begin to tell you how much time I spend doing these things everyday, time that could be used in a more productive manner! I truly appreciate any time you spend helping your child learn to complete these tasks on their own.

Dear Parents,
Picture re-takes are being
planned for Thursday, November 15, 2012, beginning at 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. If
you need to have your child’s photo re-taken, please do the
following:
1)
Call the office to get your child’s name on the re-take
list.
2)
Return the complete original packet of photos on
November 15.
If your child did not have money with them on
the original picture day to purchase photos, forgot to turn in their payment
envelope, was absent, or is new to May Watts School, they should also be placed
on the re-take list. All students have their photos taken in order to have them
appear in our May Watts yearbook and for their academic file regardless of
whether you purchase photos or not.
