This week we talked a lot about the food pyramid and how important it is to eat a variety of foods to stay healthy. When we ate our snacks (and lunch) the students were asked to think about what food group their items were from. It was a great way to apply what we are learning to a real life situation. Students took the time to think about what they were eating...and that is AWESOME! A fun (optional) activity we will do next week involves our snack time. We are trying to encourage the students to eat healthier snacks as well as to try a variety of foods. As a team, we have come up with a snack schedule for the week. We are hoping the students will embrace this idea and try to eat a snack from a different food group each day. Your child can participate each day or choose a few. It is up to you. The schedule is below. I look forward to seeing some healthy snacks from all the food groups!
Monday Dec. 3 – Grain Group (bread and cereal)
Wednesday Dec. 5 – Fruit Group
Thursday Dec. 6 – Milk Group (cheese, yogurt)
Friday Dec. 7– Meat and Bean Group
Next week we will be talking about the letter N. Students will learn about noodles, non-fiction stories, needs vs wants, meet our new authors Don and Audrey Wood, and of course continue to learn about nutrition and healthy habits.
In math, we will work on problem solving, addition basics within 5 and 10 (using objects to solve the problems) and work more with our math wall. Assessing for 2nd quarter is not that far off. Students will be assessed on a variety of different skills. Most of the skills will still be in the beginning or developing stage for the next 2 report cards as we continue to explore and apply our skills to real life situations.
